I know there is a lot of guys in Australia who are still riding from the days before I left 4 years ago! Whilst I am looking forward to meeting plenty of new faces particually in Sydney like Peace and Mitch, I was wondering who is still feeling the trials mojo and which guys have left the fray.

So basically this is a "What ever happened to..." post.

I'll list a few names but really would like to know about any riders in Oz from that era!

Dave Harder ?
Ben Benny ?
Darren Patterson (sp) ?
Dan and Nick Pearce ?

Cheers,
Damo
Arriving back 26th Jan :wiggle:

Ben Benny, my favourite Australian rider of all time, pretty much dropped out of competitive trials a couple of years ago to have a decent shot at university. A shame, but I hope we see him again soon. I recall that he wrote a review for a monty mod bike in AMB (Australian Mountain Bike magazine) sometime last year so is still alive. I gave them shit for not mentioning that he was sponsored by monty. I think that Dan and Nick Pearce pretty much just hang around on the queensland coast, still riding and doing amazing stuff apparently, but not competing or coming down south, unfortunately. Both riding Megamo dual disc mod bikes at last check.

Darren Patterson got married a couple of months ago and still rides, and gets on 50% of people's nerves. Haven't seen Dave Harder since...the last time I saw Tobe Rush in person actually at Oakleigh 2002?...he was on a beaten up old blue brisa then. I asked Rod Smith (Brisa Australia) how long Dave had had the frame and was told, with tears, that the frame was a month old. Ouch. That thing had the shit beaten out of it.

If you left four years ago, Canberra would have had four trials riders that I know of. Myself, just starting out on a raceline 20"; Andre Quaglio, on a schwinn frame (Lenosky fan); Andre's uni friend Nick, on a KHS frame; perhaps Nick Herald on a Norco steel frame.

Now there are 15-20 riders here and we have a great scene ( www.canberratrials.com ), you should come down sometime if you're going to take up trials again, but Canberra is an awesome place for other MTB as well, really worth a day trip from Sydney.

Word to Tomac.

Darrens definately still riding, even though he's married (like me). He is getting on peoples nerves which makes him basically the most fun person to ride with/drink with in Melbourne. I have footage of Ben Benny at the 2002 nats at Beauty and its a great sight, an awesome rider all round, great stuff.

Recently rode a demo with Dave Breer in Melbourne, not sure whether youd know him or not, but he is still kicking ass.

Talon Weaving left trials some time ago, he found dancing more fun so he now does that as far as we know.

Dr. Dre Quaglio is still riding as of Scott Clare's engagement party, and prmoises to ride more. Huxter is still ridin sport and Hugh is riding still last time I checked.

PM Tomac for detailed info as he is the man.

Sounds cool, I have ridden with Andre and Craig Pearce a few times I think that Andre and a white leech norco last time I saw him. I might have met you at the Nationals I would have been on a orange Rhino?

Thanks for the info Tobe, glad to hear being married hasn't stopped you, I am practically married as well these days. Darren was always a smart arse but you have to like the guy... Talon gave up trials eh, dancing the bain of many a trials rider , I see from the vids that Andrew Dickey is still riding is he still winning everything if not who's da man? Anyhow I am thinking to try and make a few comps when I get back, where can I find out more about whats on?

btw did I meet you when the Courier Championships were on back in the day, I have a blurry memory of riding with a Tobe(y) outside the IMAX?

the place to looks for comp details is http://biketrialsaustralia.com under the "calender" link on the right hand side of the main page. when are you coming back? if it is before january 23 and you have some money to burn on a trip to adelaide, go the the port elliot comp. i think there will be a pretty huge turnout and the rocks there are insane. i'll even bring up a BT for you ;)

Peace
12-17-2004, 07:19 PM
what the hell is with ppl getting Dave Harders bike COMPLETELY wrong lol! he has never owned or ridden a brisa... that would be jesse kovac from sydney, the ppl on Pitbulls up here are me, Mitch, Adam.
But Dave harder is now riding a BT and fuck me dead he can up that thing! i hate him. His list of trials bikes owned over the years are a Rhino, PX, Trek Bruiser (fuck that was a mistake) No brisa's or Pitbulls

Sorry guys but Ben Benny is to cool for trials now and has moved onto MTB'ing/Hucking, major pity! he was a smooth rider.

I cant remember which peirce is which, but the bigger one is still riding and kicking ass! apparantly he is getting into being a stunt man and specializing in bikes, and the other is doin a little bit of that too but he has dropped trials a lot and now just surfs. thats about it, they hang round with dan martin a lot who does still ride but changes his bike way way too much!
Peace

Dave Harder isn't a tall, lanky guy with much black hair?

I might be thinking of a different Dave Harder.

maybe theres two, but dave harder in Syd is a tall built like a brick shithouse guy with short brown hair and lamb chop side burns now hahaha. There are a few ather daves around, think theres a friend of pauls who is a dave that used to ride a brisa, and is tall.... really i have no idea but you guys arent thinkin of the Dave Harder in Syd.

Oh and Damo, Chris Quain is gettin back into it, which is great cos he brings so much life and laughter into rides! Adam Kelly (aykay) will blow your mind at how smooth the fucker is, and he goes big too. All on a bike with pretty average parts on it....except for the middleburn cranks :)

Peace

Andrew Dickey is most definitely the man, being chased up by 16 (17?) Yr old Joe Brewer, Craig Pearce, Alex Markwart and Im tipping Alex PV very soon. Andy recently came 30th at the world champs in Les Gets, and is most certainly a contender for the future.

I have only been riding for nearly 4 years, and I dont think I ever went to a Courier Champs (though I may be mistaken, drugs do that to you!) I havent seen Lanky ride for some time which is kinda shitty. Bruce Hamley is still riding and is riding really well as far as ive seen, though with the long bike revolution hes not as competitive as he once was.

Canberra is an awesome place to go, all, the guys there are friendly and love to ride, and the riding spots are sweet. They have a good comp scene up there too.

The final word on the Nationals this year is that they are definitely at Eildon, there was talk that they would be moved back to Beauty, but that has been dumped. Id really like to see everyone there, instead of having a comp in the dust like this year, we are reportedly setting up on the Oval in front of the Pub balcony! Rock on. The set-up should be sick, Rod and Brett and crew are going up a week early to make it so. Would be awesome if lots of people can make it, should be a great few days judging by how drunk we all got last year :barf:

Oh yeah, the World Champs in 2006 are in NZ! I think I should start a thread about that too at some stage.

Anyway enough ranting, if you need info on comps or anything else just give me a buzz or an email tobe@observedtrials.net or 0422 904 028.

Oh thankyou Tobe for the info on Eildon! I was really thinking of not going because the dust pit last time was not much fun. An oval would be great. What date is it, I'm sure it is on [ur]http://biketrialsaustralia.com[/url] but I'm having trouble getting on to it. Thanks!

Paul, we all know its you that likes the drains ;)

Alex, Sat 19th March, I think were going to be there a day or so early, and a day or so after. Me and Leah and Kade are staying in a Motel or some shit, I want to be there to help set up a bit if I can, and also practice the sections :naughty:

It would be sweet if there was a good ACT contingent there.

since most everyone here is talking bout Australia, I have always wondered... just how difficult is it to get into the country? I have heard many different things over the years ranging from marrying a native to having a job before you get there. I know this is NOT trials-related but I have wanted to go to Australia since I was in grade school, like a milloin years ago. Any info would be good since chatrooms are usually devoid of true Aussies.

seriously, you're white, you're fine. It's like that everywhere, you shouldn't have a problem. They won't chase up your visa unless you have an ethnic name. The ones that run the country are uncharacteristically racist. Nice country. I think. Nice beer. It's taken me too long to write this post. Any mistakes?

Hey thanks for all the feedback guys, sounds like there is still penty of riders in it.

I'm afraid I won't be back until the 26th Jan so wont be able to make the comp on the 23rd. Will be trying to make a few after that though!!

Looking forward to meeting you all in the near future...

Peace So Chris, Adam and Dave are all riding and Brendan will soon be looking to get out of the house, if you know what I mean, lol That is pretty much the core group from my day! Plus you and Mitch Ho and assorted others I hear are still riding and it sounds like the scene is alive and well in Sydney.

I went riding yesterday in London it was about 5 degrees with a windchill of about 10 so after 4 hours riding in that I was dreaming of 30 degree days that are only a month and a bit away:x:

You talking about the storm water drains that criss-cross under every suburb of Canberra? I used to live in Kambah and loved exploring those things. My mates and I walked from near the Kambah fire station to Wanniassa without seeing daylihgt once. So dark you couldn't see your hand an inch in front of your face. Closest thing to being blind. Very freaky but way cool at the same time.
