dont pull on the back brake, leave it dis-engaged. bend down to get as much power as possible, then jump up and pull teh bike with you, when you get to the height you want, push with your legs to get the rear wheel on top of your obstacle.

Fork flexes and you can use the rebound to shoot you up. Search for "lunge" "wheelswap" "wheelswitch". Lots of useful topics and posts on this.

When you are actually doing the move, you shouldnt be on either brake.

put brakes on when on object. (sometimes i switch on/off to balance/move closer)
crouch, disengage brakes, jump, lift, leg power etc.
brakes back on to stop on top of said object.

don't put the brake on until the tire is in the exact position you want it. reason being that it can kinda roll a bit if you're reaching your limits and can barely clear the wheel on, as opposed to dragging on the edge and then not making it slipping and landing on the bashguard and getting a dab, because uci is what you do on the internet.
