I'm just wondering how important the pedal-up to rear wheel technique is.
Would you use it in a comp, how would you use it? As long as you can touch-up stuff is it even necessary to learn pedal-ups?

Aren't pedal-ups a pre-requisit (sp?) for taps?

Pretty much.

There will be some stuff that you may have to get up on that dont have a surface you can tap.

Well, its very useful to be honest, but I highly doubt you will need it at comps until you progress past the sport level.

If by touch hop you mean starting very near the object (like 1/8th or 1/4 pedal stroke), slamming on your pedal to lift your front wheel and then hopping to rear (almost like a wheel switch with a little forward momentum), then I think that will be sufficient to get you through sport class. Theres no point in putting off pedal ups though if you wish to ever reach the expert level :).

All I did when I started was roll up stuff, or touch-up (wheel switch + forward momentum), or bunnyhop. Now I find I really need to learn taps for the level im at.

I suck hardcore at taps, and i think the main reason is that I didnt learn pedal ups ups earlier. I have now been practising them flat out, and am slowly getting them, but trying to re-learn a technique is hard and annoying work. So learn pedal ups as soon as you can.

I suck ass at taps too. My pedal up is late, late as in, on my way up, sometimes my rear hits before I'm actually ON the object....taps....I wish there were an instructional video...like Kevins mod up video, only, on something that's like a wall.....

The technique I'm talking about is where you never touch the object at all with the front wheel, you do a rolling pedal hop to rear wheel onto the object!

I'm just wondering if its that important?

Yes, it is important. Most people advise you not to even think about taps until you can get 3 feet with this move.

I see people do this move effortlessly, just wonder about its technique use in comps.
I'm between a novice/sport rider, thin line! Everything I ride onto or over is by touching it with the front wheel.

i don't know if comps are 'different' in different places, but i use pedalups very little in comps. the last indoor i went to, there were only two places i used a pedalup per round. that be expert.
